The driver of a car ran over a man and dragged him for 4 miles before another motorist notified him of the body under his vehicle.

The man who was dragged lived and remains at the Medical College of Virginia with serious injuries.

James City County police spokesman Stephen Rubino said the drivers of two cars were racing in the 8900 block of Richmond Road around 3 p.m. Saturday. A 31-year-old Lanexa man driving a 1997 Volkswagen lost control near the James City Recycling center. The car hydroplaned on the wet road, spun several times, struck a tree and ejected the driver.

The driver of the second car, a 22-year old Providence Forge man, told police he had been racing with the driver of the Volkswagen, saw the vehicle crash, and ran over what he believed to be debris from the accident.

The debris tuned out to be the driver of the Volkswagen. The 22-year-old man stopped in New Kent County after another motorist notified him of the body under his Honda.

An 8-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl in the Volkswagen suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash. Rubino said medics took the girl to MCV and the boy to Williamsburg Sentara Regional Hospital. Their relationship to the driver was not clear, Rubino said.
