Whatever rampant depression may be sweeping across their passionate fan base right now, Cardinals players would not allow any of those morbid preoccupations to creep inside their clubhouse Wednesday.

Let everyone else in Cardinal Nation feel the gloom-and-doom pall hanging over their heads after learning the devastating news that staff ace Adam Wainwright could be lost for the season. Inside the clubhouse and on the practice fields at Roger Dean Stadium on this bright, sunny day, Waino's teammates did what smart, ultra-competitive players always do in these dire times.

They acknowledged the gloom but ignored the doom.

"We gotta keep going," Kyle Lohse said as he strolled off the field after morning practice. "No one's going to feel sorry for us if Adam is gone. We just have to go do our work. You just keep going on and do your thing."

Who knows what ideas general manager John Mozeliak has hatching in his head as he awaits the results of the second opinion on Wainwright's tender right elbow? Is there a free-agent signing to be made, an imaginative trade on the horizon, or will Mozeliak simply sit tight and allow the competition in camp to serve as a short-term solution to the nightmare of losing a Cy Young-caliber starter?

He won't be the only top-tier player the Cards lose.
