Following their 4-2 victory Thursday against Houston, the Cardinals elected to bring lefty reliever Brian Tallet with them to Kansas City and will activate him before opening interleague play, making him the 13th pitcher on the staff.

Tallet, out more than a month with a broken right hand, had originally been scheduled to throw a second rehab assignment Friday night for Low-A Quad Cities. He was told Thursday instead to pack a bag and join the team on its flight to Kansas City.

A team official said they will have eight relievers for the three-game series against the AL Royals and then reassess the makeup of the roster before heading west to San Diego for a three-game set next week.

To make room on the roster for Tallet, the Cardinals optioned first baseman Mark Hamilton to Class AAA Memphis.
