<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Astros sign Lee to six-year, $100 million dealESPN.com news servicesHOUSTON -- The Houston Astros, the NL's worst-hitting team, signed outfielder Carlos Lee and right-hander Woody Williams on Friday, bolstering its offense and a pitching staff that could be without Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte.Lee, a two-time All-Star left fielder who played with Texas and Milwaukee last season, signed a six-year, $100 million deal after his fifth straight season with at least 30 home runs and 99 RBI.A source told ESPN's Jayson Stark the only significant non-monetary clause in the contract is that Lee will have a complete no-trade clause for the first four years of the contract and a limited no-trade for the final two years.Williams, who grew up in Houston and was a college star there, is a 14-year veteran who was 12-5 with a 3.65 ERA last season, his best ERA since 2002 with St. Louis. The Astros were one of several teams bidding for Lee, joining the Philadelphia Phillies, who failed to land Alfonso Soriano; Baltimore Orioles, who Stark previously reported had made serious overtures to Lee; and San Francisco Giants.Adding Lee will give the Astros another power threat besides All-Star first baseman Lance Berkman, who had 45 home runs and 136 RBI and finished third in NL MVP voting behind Philadelphia's Ryan Howard and St. Louis' Albert Pujols.Houston was last in the NL in batting average at .255 and languished out of the pennant race until a late-season run that almost overtook World Series champion St. Louis.Lee hit 28 homers in 102 games for the Brewers before the Rangers picked him up a few days before the July trade deadline. His power numbers dipped after that, but he finished with combined totals of 37 home runs and 116 RBI. He hit .300, including .322 in 59 games with the Rangers.Woody WilliamsStarting PitcherSan Diego PadresProfile2006 SEASON STATISTICSGM W L BB K ERA25 12 5 35 72 3.65Williams, who grew up in Houston and was a college star there, is a 14-year veteran who was 12-5 with a 3.65 ERA last season with San Diego, his best ERA since 2002 with St. Louis.Williams is 124-101 with a 4.09 ERA in 391 career games, including 299 starts. The Astros' staff is anchored by right-hander Roy Oswalt, who signed a five-year, $73 million contract in August. Bad move. Lee is getting old, fat and lazy. And he is not worth as much as Soriano.

Technically, he's worth 2/34 less then Soriano though. [IMG] I agree it is a bad move though, but in a market where Juan Pierre is worth 9 million a year, I guess you have to overpay. For some reason I bet Houston wishes they had spent the money on Beltran 2 seasons ago. His contract is all of a sudden looking like a Bargain. :whistling:

The market gets spendy when there is nothing on it. Imagine going to a car auction and only 3 cars being of supreme quality, everyone there needs a car and isn't allowed to go anywhere else to get one. The 3 quality cars are going to be way overpaid for. It's all standard economics. Limited supply + high demand = Carlos Lee getting 100 Mil.I'm happy the Yankees traded for prospects and are using the farm more and more.

I'm glad this contract will fuck over Houston for a few years, with Berkman and Oswalt's deals also. :)And they will have a problem in a few years when Carlos Lee gets old and fat, b/c Fat Elvis already plays 1B, and Carlos Lee is going to have to be a 1B/DH in a few years to keep his career going. All these deals make Derrek Lee look like he was lowballed.

They said on ESPN Radio last night that the Astros have the ability to opt out after the 5th year with "some conditions" if they choose to do so.

You're ridiculous. He's old fat and lazy.. but yet he knocked in a career high 116 last season? And hit a career high 37 home runs, and hit .300+ for the 3rd time in his career? He even had a better OBP than God (to you) himself, Soriano. He's never hurt either.. he's pretty much a guranteed 150+ games a year, and last year he played in all but 1 game. His defense was better than Soriano's last year (understandable because it was Soriano's first season in the outfield), but his defense is still very reliable. And something else to chew on.... he's 5 months and 13 days younger than Soriano.

I would think it's el horso who can opt out. And his defense has been declining rapidly, and he's got a lack of dinner plate discipline. He's fat and lazy, just like Fat Elvis is. Houston is going to have serious problems in a few years. That short porch in RF will help and all, but Soriano is going to do better, b/c Wrigley is pretty small, and he could go yard even against a 20 mph wind

If you look at Soriano's #s and see that he did that in the cave that RFK is, imagine what he can do at Wrigley. 50-50 is very realisitic. Soriano is just as durable as el horso. And Soriano does not continue getting fat like el horso is.
