"Sitting between Chris Paul and LeBron James after the East and West All-Stars went through practice Saturday, Carmelo Anthony braced himself for another invasion of reporters from near and far, from all parts of David Stern's basketball-happy globe, all wanting to know the same thing.

"Would you consider Utah?" shouted one reporter.

Well, it was not that question, exactly, because we all know that Anthony is going to be a Knick or maybe a Net.

"I like our chances," one Knicks source said Saturday.

So do the Nets. Who's to say that Anthony hasn't clandestinely given his OK on an extension to play in New Jersey? The Nuggets would be thrilled because it's the package they really want, first and foremost. The league probably would be elated to see a star commit to Brooklyn.

But if you listened to Anthony, as difficult as it is becoming, he had never communicated with Mikhail Prokhorov, even via smoke signals, before it became known Saturday that they would meet.

"Yeah, I would have broke bread with him," he said. "I would have drunk some water with him. Take a shot of water or something."

    How about truth serum?

Saturday, Anthony refused to admit that he had met with Jim Dolan on Thursday night. On Friday, he led everyone astray by saying that he had yet to meet with the Garden chairman, and that when he did have his meeting, he wanted to "look into Mr. Dolan's eyes" to see if the Knicks really wanted him."
