Carrick Salutes United’s Back Four
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has praised the team's back four for what could turn into record-breaking form in a few weeks.
Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over Wigan on Saturday marked their sixth successive Premiership clean sheet. With just two goals conceded in the league so far, Sir Alex’s men have the meanest defence in England’s top flight.
Michael Carrick is convinced that stability at the back is the key to mounting a successful title challenge.
“At this level it's a great achievement to go that many games without conceding and it's giving us the base to go on and win games,” the midfielder told Manchester United Radio.
“I think our defensive record last season was brilliant too. It's not something we've suddenly changed or worked on.”
Indeed, only Chelsea let in fewer goals in last season’s campaign. After a somewhat indifferent start to the season, which saw draws against Reading and Portsmouth as well as the derby defeat to Manchester City, United now appear to be firmly back on track.
Team spirit, says Carrick, has been the reason behind the revival.
“We have fantastic players here and everyone's willing to work for the team,” he said. Carrick’s recent elbow injury has forced him out of United’s recent fixtures and will sideline him for another month, meaning he also misses England’s forthcoming qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.
Nevertheless, the former Spurs and West Ham man is confident about United’s performances in his absence and excited about returning to the starting line-up.
“We've put a great run together and everyone's really digging in and working for each other. It's great to play in a team like that and I'm sure the boys will keepit going andscore even more goals.”
