<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Ricky Davis is 24. The Cavaliers are the third team to trade him. If you think that's a coincidence, you'd make a terrible private investigator.

Talent for talent, the Cavaliers got mugged in this deal. But - like sensible shoes - it's a trade that feels better than it looks.

You may think it a joke they traded one of their co-captains along with Chris Mihm and Yogi Stewart for role players Tony Battie, Eric Williams and project Kedrick Brown.

But calling Davis captain is like calling Mick Jagger "Sir." They're great showmen. The title just does nothing to advance the cause of the throne.

The co-captaincy was an olive branch from head coach Paul Silas, a hedged bet made in advance of asking Davis to do what Silas knew Davis would not do, probably could not do. He needed Davis to defer, share, lead without always shooting - and preferably without ever again shooting at the wrong basket in search of a triple-double.

That had as much chance of happening as LeBron James has of making an All-Time NBA Busts list.

It wasn't working between Davis and Silas.

It wasn't working between Davis and James.

Heck, it was hardly working between captain Ricky and scorer Ricky.

Davis sabotaged Silas' offense and forced James to defer. You think James stood in the corner so much because he was tired?

"I don't know if deferred is the right word," General Manager Jim Paxson said last night. "But Ricky is a strong personality."

The Cavaliers wanted rid of Davis. That is the exact right word.
