Cavs disrespected no longer

Marc Stein, the senior NBA writer at the four-lettered network, feels your pain. But that’s not the reason for where he ranked the Cavaliers in his preseason NBA power rankings.

Stein ranked the James Gang sixth in the entire NBA - behind, in order, Boston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Houston, and San Antonio - in his initial rankings. Cleveland is ranked a spot ahead of Detroit at no. 7, with Philadelphia, Utah, and Toronto rounding out the top 10.

Here’s what Stein had to say about the 2008-09 Cavs:

Although trading for Michael Redd was a nice fantasy, getting Mo Williams off the Bucks is hardly a consolation prize. He’s a younger version of the Mike — Bibby — Cleveland tried for years to add and should give Bron help.

The Bibby-Williams comparison is interesting, especially when you step back and think about what Stein’s getting at.

Both Mo Williams and Mike Bibby are good pick-and-roll point guards who shoot well off the dribble. Sure, it might get boring watching the Cavs try to pick-and-roll teams to death with Williams pairing with LeBron, but anybody who watched the Finals knows that Doc Rivers pick-and-rolled to the death against the Lakers and beat Phil Jackson’s group into the ground. In that sense, the Mo Williams acquisition by itself - combined with the re-signings of Daniel Gibson and Delonte West and the lack of contract holdouts - may be enough to elevate the Cavs to such a lofty ranking.

With training camp set to open on Tuesday, the Cavaliers won’t have the “lack of respect” card to play going into this season. It’s time for head coach Mike Brown’s group to live up to the respect that Stein - one of the league’s most respected writers - has bestowed upon them.

Good to see the Cavs finally getting respect. For too long fanns and sportswriters have written them off, only for them to rise up and prove them wrong.
