Before hiring Byron Scott as their new head coach, the Cavaliers contacted Pacers president Larry Bird about the position, according to a report on ESPN.com.

After they were turned down by Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Cleveland started looking for players-turned-coaches to impress LeBron James.

Sources close to the situation confirmed that before the Cavaliers hired Scott -- and LeBron left via free agency -- they contacted Bird to see if they could lure him back to the bench.

Bird took Cleveland's call, but quickly informed them that he had no interest in the job.

He wants to remain with Indiana and has all but ruled out a return to coaching due to family and health reasons.
