Wondering who on here is a cell phone geek? I used to have an iPhone that my boy hijacked for me to use with T-Mobile. Had it for a month and got tired of having the same phone as everybody else on earth! Gave it to my wife and got a Motorola Cliq. Have had it for about 5 months and just found out the myTouch 3G Slider comes out in 2 or 3 weeks. It runs on Android 2.1 and I'm thinking about getting it. Wondering if any of you have knowledge of this stuff.
I'm about as big of a cell phone geek as they come. I recently sold my iPhone 3G on eBay and got the HTC Droid Incredible. It also runs Android 2.1, has an 8 MP camera and a host of other badass things. I actually paid more to get it in on a one year contract instead of the standard two, since I get bored with phones so quickly, as well as how ridiculously fast the technology is moving. The myTouch looks pretty cool if you are in to sliders. I honestly can't imagine going back to a hardware keyboard, but I know a lot of people won't get a phone without one. It seenms to have a bit of an underpowered processor though (600 MHz ARM vs 1 GHz Snapdragon on the Incredible, Nexus One, EVO 4G, etc) so it may run some applications a little slowly, but it shouldn't be a big deal for most users.
I have a Motorola CLIQ and I'm starting to get sick of it. Runs slow, temperamental touchscreen, and I'm just bored of it. @MrSelfDestruct, is the HTC HD2 any good?
Did you get the firmware upgrade Motorola released a while back? Changelog for the update. I love my HTC, the touchscreen isn't as good as the iPhone, but I don't think any phone's will be. The touchscreen on that is truly remarkable. The biggest downside I can see about the HD2 is WinMo. Admittedly, I haven't used the new version, but the old ones I did use were trash. However, the HD2 spec-wise is nearly identical to EVO 4G coming out on Sprint (with the exception of 4G reception, camera and a few other.) Here's a review I just found that pretty much goes as I expected it to. Great hardware, but it's still being dragged down by the OS.
Windows Mobile always gets trashed but I've never had any issues with it. Android, on the other hand, seems to always fuck up for the people I know who have it.
FYI...Iphone is coming to Verizon in the near future. Might have been pushed back to early 2011 because of the Ipad launch. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20004484-1.html
Yes, my phone's firmware if completely up-to-date. Interesting, I'll give it a read. If you could have any phone right now, what would it be?
HTC Evo looks sweet. I have a Touch Pro..but never buy the phones, I just have insurance replace them. I might get the EVO.
Crappy. That's how I felt when I had the Blackberry Storm. I'd upgrade the OS to the latest version and it would still blow goats. If I could have any phone it would be the EVO 4G except on Verizon instead of Sprint. The screen on that is crazy and I've been very pleased with Android thus far. My main gripe with the iPhone is the lack of user customization it allows. I don't like having to keep certain apps I never use (voice recorder, etc), the fact there wasn't a quick way to switch to a silent mode (yes, I could switch to vibrate, but it would still occasionally wake me up during the night) and a few other things that are so geeky I'm probably one of maybe 3 people in the world who care about them.
I had Verizon before, now I have Sprint. My bill is like 30 dollars less and I think the service is better in every aspect.
Sprint has cheaper data plans. Verizon's voice network (at least here) is a bit better. I don't have that many issues though. 4G is going to cost $10 more for data and if you want to use it as a wifi hotspot its like $40 more.
I had Sprint a few years ago and I didn't dislike their service at all. I disliked the fact that absolutely ZERO people I know use it, so I had to carry more minutes. With Verizon I am able to carry 450 minutes and have no worries of overages. I also get 20% off my monthly bill through my employer.
No, I agree with most of your iPhone gripes. I am interested in the iPhone 4G but I'll wait for a couple of months after it's release. I'm probably going to stick with T-Mobile and you've put me off the HD2, hah. I want something that is fast with a good OS!
Have a moto Droid. Loving it so far. Its no longer the top of the line phone but I do like that its still kind of the flagship Android phone so its gets updates quickly and lots of support in general. This is my first smartphone. Liked the droid for the keyboard and glad I went for the top of the line phone because now the Eris seems so dated and takes forever to get Android updates (just got 2.1). Keyboard blows but it does come in handy as I prefer typing emails and things that are long and need to be error-free with it. Semi-related: I've decided to embrace Google taking over my life. Droid is a beast so far. Google Calendar keeps all my shit in check. Obviously I've been using Chrome for a long time. Just got google voice. Already been using iGoogle with Chrome for years. Just got google desktop. Its my own sociological experiment to see what a Google Life is like. I have a wave account but have no use for it/don't know what to do with it. I would imagine it will all come together much better once Chrome OS comes out though (I've got a spare laptop waiting for it).
