<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards: Their own free agent, James Posey, and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it's doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed. Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 2007-08 and was a NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his first season with Boston. The two-time NBA champion was a strong leader for the Celtics and opted out of the second year of a two-year deal on Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season for the Clippers and played for Celtics coach Doc Rivers in Orlando during the 1999-2000 season.</div> http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/ce...cs_make_of.html
Pretty interesting. I'm not sure how Maggette would fit in, as he's a poor man's Paul Pierce and not the defender Posey is off the bench.
I would love to have Maggette on this team. He is a starter type of player so having him on the bench would be wonderful for us. Say something happens to Pierce or Allen (long season), he would be able to fit right in and give us a big boost. Out of the two, I know what Posey did for us, but I love the way Maggette plays, so I'm hoping we get him. Getting both of them would be heaven for the Celtics fans. haha
that would make 0 sense for Maggette. He is trying to get away from the Clippers because he gets no exposure being overshadowed by the lakers. So the chances of him going to a team where he wouldn't even start and wouldn't get anywhere close to as much money are slim. The celtics are probably just throwing offers around trying to see if anyone will bite to play for the defending champions next year. They will get bites, but not from Maggette.
If PJ retires I think a big man is something they need to find a replacement for. Maybe Primoz Brezec? Kurt Thomas? Franciso Elson?
All those three choices would be nice Lava. They said they're giving PJ some time to think before he decides whether he wants to come back. I'm betting he retires.
^^ Yea that would be too bad for the Celts. He was pretty solid defensively, and had some small stretches of decent offense where he'd hit a couple short-ranged jump shots. But he can blocked fairly easily in the paint. He would be great to have on the Celts if they could keep him. I forgot about Mutumbo too. I doubt Mutumbo would come just because he lives in Houston and he seems to have enjoyed it there and has played substantial minutes for them when he's been out. But I like him and I'd like to see him win a title, although he probably doesn't have many years left in the tank. He would fit Boston's style nicely.
Yea, I kind of forgot about him. He kind of retired, but kind of said he might come back. If he rehabs well he would be decent. I just hate Mourning though.
Well, if Maggette wants an almost sure shot at a championship, then Boston is a very smart idea. However, he's looking for more money. Now, 5.8 million, I think is a lot, plus he gets a very good chance at an NBA championship. Most guys, would jump on this chance...about 10 years ago. Now, the NBA is a product and guys need to look out for their wallet, so even though this is probably the smartest move he can make, team and ring wise, he won't make it because it isn't money wise.
Yeah I agree MS, its up to him though. He could have a chance for the next two or three seasons, to be a big part of a championship team, and that of course coming on as the 6th man. Some (in other forums) are saying that if they sign Magette, they might look to move Allen in a trade. I don't see it happening myself. lol
No need to trade Allen. Maggette is like Thrilla has said, a poor mans' Paul Pierce. So to trade a very good 3 point shooter, defender and a guy who has built amazing chemistry for Maggette, would be pointless. Right now, I think Ainge is hoping Maggette can see past the dollars, and look at what a great team the Celtics are. But, like you've pointed out, it's all on Maggette. And the consensus has shown, that he'll pick more money over a better team.
^ Greats points there MS. With so many free agents, hopefully someone buys the less money on a championship team idea.
Thanks CK. I'm sure someone is smart enough to see that rings are worth a lot. And it's not like they offered Maggette 200K, 5.8 is a nice salary to get on a team who has KG, PP and Ray Allen.
I was thinking the same thing, like imagine Brand for example, has plenty of money to retire right now. Why not take a pay cut and still get paid millions and at the same time have a great chance of getting a couple of rings. I seriously don't understand some of these players with all the money that they make. 1 million for me would be good. Heck 100,000 a year I would live like a rich person and would have no problems whatsoever. Here they are making millions every season, plus making money on the side from commercials and things like that and yet they continue to remain greedy and want even more. lol
Yea, but the thing is, they have tons of different things they pay for. Family, close friends, cars, houses. There mom wants a car, then they're dad, buddy and so on. Like, I think money is important, but not THAT important. Also, breaking news, Baron Davis has just signed with the Clippers. Huge chance Maggette and Brand will go back. Not a bad three-some with Kama and Thornton and Gordon in there too.
That probably means that Brand will be back, and there will be no money left for Maggette, unless he wants to take a pay cut.
Lol, very doubtful. The Clippers will offer him huge money and they will to Brand also. Good try by the Celtics though.
