Samsung is taking another shot at Android-powered point-and-shoot cameras with its recently announced Galaxy Camera 2. The second generation device features many of the same specs as the original model—including a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor, Xenon flash, and 21x optical zoom—but it does include a few notable changes, making it an overall more capable camera. I got to spend some time with the Galaxy Camera 2 while at CES, and left Samsung's booth surprisingly satisfied with its performance.

The Galaxy Camera 2's software has been updated to include Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, complete with access to the Google Play store and its many photo taking and sharing apps. Samsung's camera app also features more shooting modes—28 in total—and new image processing software. The device has received a slight design change as well, which includes the faux-leather material that Samsung seems determined to apply to its entire range of mobile products.

Prepping to take pictures with the Galaxy Camera 2 is as simple of a process as it is on any standard Android device. Even easier if you consider that Samsung has placed a static camera icon that can be found regardless of which home screen you're looking at. The camera app's top-level menu is almost identical to the one found on the company's phones, but there are more sub-menus and shooting options for quick adjustments or more detailed fine-tuning.

Samsung's Android-based camera software tends to perform pretty well, and the photos I had taken with the new Galaxy Camera and its 4.8-inch display looked good. I wasn't able to take a closer look at the pictures on a larger, high-resolution display to observe potential flaws in the image quality, unfortunately, but the initial results were promising.

Prior to spending some time with the Galaxy Camera 2, I felt that the entire idea was a gimmick. But after just a few minutes of using the device, it actually began to make sense. With the help of Android, the Galaxy Camera can be far more versatile than a standard point-and-shoot. And the Galaxy Camera's optical zoom and Xenon flash make it more a capable all-around shooter than a smartphone.

Samsung's Galaxy Camera 2 may not be for everyone, but it definitely looks like it could be a viable option for someone looking for more, easier, and quicker shooting and sharing options from their point-and-shoot. Samsung has yet to announce how much the Galaxy Camera 2 will cost at launch, but it should be available during the first quarter of the 2014.
