With the Chicago White Sox forced to play a doubleheader that wasn't originally on the schedule, Chris Sale had one modest goal: eat up innings and spare the bullpen.

The left-hander did that, and more.

Sale struck out 12 over 7 2/3 shutout innings, and the White Sox defeated the Orioles 3-2 Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader caused by rioting in Baltimore last month.
