<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Skyline's Calvin Miles Jr. figured he had nothing to lose by entering his name in the NBA draft, which he did Thursday.

The Texas signee will not hire an agent so he can retain his NCAA eligibility. The deadline to withdraw is June 21, a week before the draft. Miles said he would forgo college if he was assured of being a mid-first round pick or better.

"It's a lifetime goal," Miles said. "If it's there now, why not see what's going to happen?"

No North Texas player has ever made the jump from high school to the NBA.

Miles, a versatile 6-6, 210-pound McDonald's and Parade All-American who averaged 23.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists his senior season, is projected as the No. 22 pick by NBADraft.net.

One NBA personnel director contacted Friday afternoon said he considers Miles to be a second-round pick.

"I understand him wanting to test the waters, and I think he's a very good player," the personnel director said. "He's talented. But he's just not ready."

Miles wants to see how high his stock can go and plans to work out for a handful of NBA teams in the coming month.

If he decides to withdraw, he could still be in Austin in time for the second session of summer school.

"Everything's been very positive on both ends," UT assistant coach Rodney Terry said. "His family has kept us totally in the loop."

Seagoville's LaMarcus Aldridge filed for the NBA draft last year but withdrew and attended Texas.

Miles' father, Calvin Miles Sr., said a proposed age limit for NBA players had a minor role in spurring the decision.

The current age limit for entry into the NBA is 18. But the league's collective bargaining agreement expires this summer, and commissioner David Stern has pushed to include a 20-year-old limit in the next deal.

There is no guarantee the players association will accept it. But the possibility has produced a flood of younger players trying to slip in under the current agreement. </div>
