Rick Barnes took one look at C.J. Miles’ filled-out frame during the Jazz’s first practice of training camp and was stunned Tuesday.

Barnes recruited Miles to the University of Texas before the swingman entered the NBA Draft out of high school in Dallas in 2005, then weighing about 185 pounds. So the Longhorns coach has the perspective of a visiting relative who’s amazed by a child’s growth, in contrast to the view of parents who see the kid every day.

The Jazz have spent five seasons watching and waiting for Miles to develop into the basketball player they’ve wanted, and it just might be happening. Considering how Miles performed in the 2010 playoffs, built a 235-pound body and keeps growing in multiple ways, general manager Kevin O’Connor is labeling him one of the Jazz’s core players.

    About time, right?

“He’s been here six years,” said coach Jerry Sloan, in a tone that suggests Miles’ progress is hardly ahead of schedule.
