Why would Hillary stay with Bill at this point?

She's got The Big Foreign Policy Job that gives her all the gravitas she'll ever need. If she ever runs for President again, it won't be as Bill's wife, or as the junior senator from New York. It'll be as Former Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

She couldn't divorce Bill before now, because it would imply that she's divorced herself from the Clinton administration, which just got rosier and rosier in hindsight as the Bush administration circled the drain.

Love? Pshhhhhh. Even beyond the humiliation of Monica (what strong person would want a single name like that lingering over their reputation), you've also got the way Bill single-handedly alienated millions of Democrats with his Obama = Jesse Jackson comments. Not to mention how Bill always seems to make everything about Bill.

Sooo.......I wouldn't be surprised if she had a call in to Obama about a week ago that said, "Look, about a year from now I'll be divorced from Bill and you won't ever have to worry about one of your interns giving him head while I'm giving you a briefing. Give me the job and I won't be there to swoop in four years from now and run against you if things start heading south."

The British might disagree about Divorce o' the Century. After all, they had Charles and Diana. But on this side of the pond, I don't see any more compelling (or revealing) divorce.

And that is mook's great and tawdry political prediction for 2009.

(You can bet it's true because I said that last sentence in the third person.)

I love it. I really do.

The Clinton marriage seems to be one based on politics and not love.

For them, it's one in the same. I imagine that on some level they really do love one another, but that love is different from the usual marriage. I hope they stay together.
