<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Sam Cassell, traded by the Timberwolves to the Clippers for Marko Jaric, has refused to take a physical with his new team and is demanding an extension on his contract, which has one year to go. Cassell is asking for a two-year deal. The Wolves hope this doesn't kill the deal.

Had the Wolves traded Cassell in the middle of last season as suggested by Flip Saunders, Saunders still might be coaching the team.</div>

I was expecting this issue to come up with Cassell. He made a stink about it last year, but I'm sure the Clippers also anticipated ane extension demand. The Clippers have the cap space and money to pay Cassell for two years, but Sam should take the physical first, and then negotiate the terms of a new deal.

NBA players make enough money as is. Plus, Cassell's old. I know a lot of americans would be very content with the NBA minimum of $250k a year, more for veterans. I dislike Cassell right now for this. I always loved his game, but this is distasteful.

I'm beginning to wonder if another lockout would've been good for the players... Kept them in check, ya know.. They're disgracing the league.

Under tha new CBA, David Stern has the authority to punish players for trying to pull stuff like this. Don't be surprised to see him get involved if Cassell continues to be a problem.

O_O , Didn't know that about the new CBA. What can Stern do to Cassell, fine him? If it's just a fine, I don't think Cassell cares much.

It's a provision that the Stern pushed for after watching guys like Jim Jackson refuse to report to their new teams while all he could do is sit back and watch.

yeah i think cassel is super banged up. i think this brings up an interesting issue with nba athletes-they just don't take the offseason seriously enough that they come into training camp and prone to injury (vince carter syndrome). this might account for why a non-contact support like basketball, relative to hockey and football sees such diminished skill level by their superstar athletes. with age comes the lose of athleticism and nba stars just don't keep up. allen houston, terrel brandon, penny, grant hill, shawn kemp are just a few nba stars that have almost vanished off the basketball map rapidly.

That is a good thing, I don't know about everyone else but hearing these NBA players demand things gets old in a hurry. But then again, what kind of punishment can Stern lay on Cassel? At this point it is harmless to ask for a contract extension as long as you can negotiate professionally and actually show up for physicals and such. During training camp and the season is when stuff like this should not occur, because it can definitely hurt your team's chemistry.

hmmm...I must of missed something...everbody is talking about fines and stuff, for what? asking for an extension...please. No where in that paper does it say he is going to not report to training camp or anything serious, so what are you fining him for?

He is just letting it be known that before he gets traded to the Clippers, that his main objective still is his extension...he is trying to get his last legit pay day while he still can....

That's pretty bad considering the trade cannot be finalized until he completes it. He's trying to manipulate the Clippers, which is wrong and he should be punished for it.
