<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">This is Day 24 of the NBA's silly season, and Cleveland has yet to sign a free agent ? either their own in Drew Gooden or someone else's like David Wesley.

Don't get me wrong. I still have complete faith in the club's brain trust of Danny Ferry and Mike Brown. I just wish they'd get the Gooden saga over with, one way or another, so they can begin remaking the periphery of the roster. ...

At some point, Gooden and agent Calvin Andrews have to realize that there is no big payday coming from another team. Their best option is to take Cleveland's $5.36 million qualifying offer and play next season here.

Doing so benefits Gooden because he gets a 20 percent pay raise now, along with unrestricted free agency next summer. It also helps the Cavaliers because it buys them another season to figure out whether Gooden or Anderson Varejao is their long-term answer at power forward.

Because of the NBA's salary cap, Cleveland is only going to be able to keep one of them. Gooden is a much more polished player today, but perhaps Varejao will continue the rapid development he showed in the playoffs and surpass him. It would be nice for Ferry to have another year to make a more educated decision. ...

The sooner Luke Jackson can be traded, the better. Sasha Pavlovic can fill the same role of 10th man, only better, because he can make shot opportunities for himself. ...

Shooting guard Damon Jones is being shopped elsewhere, which is a shame because he was one of the Cavaliers' better players from February on. "D.J." made just under half of his 3-point attempts over the season's final four months, including a pair of game-winning bombs on the road.

Unfortunately, Cleveland almost has to deal Jones for cap flexibility since it is already on the hook for $21 million to Eric Snow ? thanks to yet another brilliant trade made by ex-GM Jim Paxson. ...</div>
