Colangelo says nothing less than a complete reno job would have saved Raptors

WATERLOO, Ont. (CP) - Bryan Colangelo knew it would take nothing less than a wrecking ball to turn around the Toronto Raptors and inject a little hope back into the sagging NBA club when he took over as the team's GM late last season.

With nine new faces, new jerseys, a brand new locker-room and a discernible new team-first attitude as the Raptors opened training camp Tuesday, it was obvious Colangelo had left behind few reminders of the squad that finished well out of the playoffs last season.

"Last year, 27 wins, I think everybody was very disappointed, fans, media, internally management and ownership was very disappointed. There was nowhere to go but up," Colangelo said.

"So a major overhaul . . . it gave everybody a shot at hope. And there are a lot of smiling faces around here, just with the freshness of the group."

The mood is far removed from last season when the Raptors opened the season not exactly flush with hope - former GM Rob Babcock had just predicted his team would win even less games than the previous season (and they did). </div>
