The Detroit Pistons may not have acquired native Detroit Derrick Coleman for his post game after all. With Pistons fans clamoring about the logjam at the power forward and center spot in Detroit, squeezing out Darko Milicic of any playing time, it appears a reprieve may be on the way.

Although Coleman had a close, personal relationship with coach Larry Brown during their time together with the Sixers and Brown made it a point to mention that one of his first congratulatory calls after winning the title last spring came from Coleman, sources close to the Pistons indicated that Coleman would be waived or included in a future trade, and that McCaskill has no future with Detroit.

Coleman missed 48 games last season because of injuries, including a chronic knee problem. He also had a fractured finger. He said last season that he would not undergo another surgical procedure solely to play another season or two.

"We had pretty much made it clear that Derrick would most likely not be back," Sixers president/general manager Billy King said. "We didn't know exactly what the procedure was going to be."

Sometimes, though, it is as critical to be lucky as it is to be good. To make the matching contracts come within 15 percent and $100,000, the Sixers had to re-sign McCaskill, an unrestricted free agent. By league rule in a sign-and-trade situation, a player must be given at least a 3-year contract with at least one season guaranteed. McCaskill, who averaged 1.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 59 games last season, walked away with a guaranteed $922,000.

"I don't look at any deals as 'steals,' " King said. "I think people make deals based on what's best for their franchise. This was a fit for us. What [Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars] did was a fit for what they wanted to do."

Dumars has created some precious wiggle room for '05-06, when he is expected to pick up a fourth-year option on Tayshaun Prince's rookie contract, and '06-07, when Ben Wallace becomes a free agent.

"We feel like this is a good trade for our team and our organization as we move forward," Dumars said in a release on the Pistons' Web site.

Not very surprising to me. They already have enough big men, and Coleman would be the odd man out in Detroit.

I would rather he stuck around, you can never have enough depth. Yes DC can be a problem and injury prone but he is another big body to throw at guys like Shaq. Coleman has range and takes up space.

I would think Larry Brown would try and convice Joe not to waive him, If anyone can get Coleman to play the right way again, It's LB.

There has been no signs from the Detroit media that Coleman is going to get waived. Who knows maybe in a few days we will know.

I think the trade will cause alot of people in Detroit to be a little upset. The fact is whether or not they waiver Amal or DC, it's still going to keep Darko out pretty much the whole year again. The fans will have a problem with this because everyone wants him to play and pretty much will not have any more patience with Larry Brown sitting him. I myself think he will most benefit from minutes on the hardwood and not just in practice.

I think Coleman would be a nice fit for the Pistons as an additional scorer and rebounder...he could be some nice insurance if McDyess was succumb to injuries...

Yeah I dont see why they dont keep DC, I think he could give Elden Campbell a run for minutes at the backup 5 spot and also play a litte 4 when needed. If you put DC on the floor with Rasheed or Mcdyess then he would really create space for them to operate down low by draging bigbodies out side to the perimeter. I know Elden has that little baseline jumper that he likes to take but I think DC's range would really benefit the Pistons two main low post scorers. And DC can still get some work done on the low block himself. Elden Campbell brings more to the defensive end, blocking shots etc. But DC has played for Brown in the past so he knows what type of effort will be needed of him. Iam guessing they are going to release him to find away to get Darko some legit minutes. But if they do release DC Iam sure he will end up somewhere because when Derrick is half-way healthy he can still contribute a few things in a role off the bench.

DC would actually be a good fit for detroit, plus he is a native who's played in the pistons b4, and has played for LB b4. but yes, there are problems with him taking minutes from milicic, and i think its a shame to keep milicic sitting on the bench the entire season. sum1 who was drafted b4 melo gotta be one helluva player.. hehe
