How Kirilenko will be accepted, both by teammates and coaches, assuming he reports to camp, is another question. Jazz center Jarron Collins chose his words deliberately Monday in addressing the subject.
"It's a situation that I think is unfortunate, when you have one of your star players voice his frustrations going into the season,'' Collins said. "Having said that, I hope that cooler heads will prevail going forward and [we] get Andrei into camp. He's a great teammate and great player."
With the Jazz set to welcome four new players and hoping to build off their trip to the Western Conference finals, Collins said, "Distractions are bothersome." He added that the Jazz need a committed Kirilenko to have any hope of winning a championship.
Williams, meanwhile, was asked about the prospect of 13 players sharing a locker room with one player who wants out. He said it wouldn't amount to a distraction because, "I think those 13 guys are going to play no matter what."
"Nobody's ever had a problem with A.K., personally,'' Williams added. "His main problem is with Coach. They don't see eye-to-eye sometimes. He wasn't happy with the way he was used. Like I said, we need to find ways to get him the ball in position for him to score."
With Kirilenko best suited to play power forward, the same position as Carlos Boozer, Williams suggested the Jazz would experiment with lineups, including using center Mehmet Okur as a small forward at times on offense.
