"Drake Nevis, the Indianapolis Colts' new defensive tackle, said he had a sense of connection with the team before he was drafted in the third round of the NFL draft Friday.

Nevis went to John Ehret High School in Marrero, La., same as Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne, and says they grew up in the same neighborhood. He knows running back Joseph Addai, who preceded Nevis at LSU and still works out there in the offseason. Nevis also noted that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is from New Orleans.

"I know a couple guys," he said. "I'm just glad to be a part of the organization. I'm going to give it everything I have to be the best player I can be."

Colts vice chairman Bill Polian said Nevis "plays exactly the way our tackles play," tough and quick with consistent gap penetration.

"He's one of those guys where you look at the tape and you say, 'This is a Colt,' " Polian said.

The Colts took Nevis with the 87th overall pick to bolster a thin position. The only defensive tackles with experience are third-year pro Fili Moala and second-year Ricardo Mathews. The team could still re-sign free agents Dan Muir, Eric Foster or Antonio Johnson.

While listed at almost 6-1 and 291 pounds, Nevis said he weighs 309. The Colts were impressed by how a big guy could move so quickly at the snap and display a relentless motor."
