People have been prophesying about the end of the world and raptures and such since the beginning of human history. Every day you can probably go downtown and find someone with a "the end of the world is near" sign. I get if one just uses this as another example of some whack-ed out old guy spewing nonsense and makes fun of it. But what is it about this particular clown (who's already been wrong once) and his numerical musings about the rapture and the end times that makes it show up on mainstream news? Or that people somehow think that Christians everywhere, instead of following what the Bible says, will now magically turn and believe what some crazy old guy says? Or that somehow, if his "prediction" doesn't come true, that that means anything whatsoever about the existence of God? I'm not mad, just curious. Especially for the non-believers in here.
It's amusing, is all. When choosing fairy stories to believe in, it is better to choose vague ones than very specific ones, so that at worst, you can claim that it was meant as an allegory rather than literally when it is proven false. You'd think after thousands of years every preacher would know how it's done, but I guess not. barfo
i have to say it is strange to see this getting all this airtime... bfw what do you think about 12/21/2012?
Harold Camping owns 66 radio stations, and his bullshit is translated into 30 languages and spewed across the world. That's why.
I had literally never heard of the guy prior to a few days ago, and I'm fairly up-to-date on people that matter. Seems like a "let's make fun of the crazy guy" thing, but it's acceptable because he is an evangelical Christian.
That doesn't seem inconsistent. It's acceptable because he's a crazy guy. But evangelical Christianity certainly is an enabler here. Anytime you go around saying "rational thought doesn't matter", you've got to expect that crazy guys are going to associate themselves with you, because that's exactly the same belief system that crazy guys have. barfo
There are crazy guys in all walks of life. Take you, for instance, a guy who thinks it's funny to mock a kid with lupus, even after their dad told you about their daughter's condition. I assume you're crazy, at least, because a normal human being wouldn't do such a disgusting thing.
I challenge you to produce any evidence whatsoever that I mocked a kid with lupus. My only references to lupus were in regards to Brandon Roy. Now, maybe he's the kid you are talking about, I don't know, but I'd call him an adult. And I assume he doesn't have lupus. barfo
For 3ra1n1ac, I don't put any stock in end dates/times/etc. When I was a kid I read up on a bunch of Nostradamus, which appealed to my puzzle-solving nature, but I never thought that I would be able to divine the date of the end of the world or whatever. I guess I try to live my life so that it doesn't matter if the world ends tomorrow or not.
