MSV Duisburg won the first ever Bundesliga meeting between the two sides with two free kicks. Despite a strong second half display, Bojan Prasnikar’s side remain rooted to foot of the table without a single win to their name.

The visitors got off to the ideal start with Bjorn Schlicke firing them ahead after only seven minutes. The 26 year old defender fired in a freekick from 27 meters which left Cottbus keeper Tomislav Piplica with no chance. The ball took a slight deflection off the wall and skidded in off the greasy surface.

The game developed into a hectic affair following the visitors opening goal but then gradually calmed down. Duisburg were happy to defend deep and be pressed into their own half, but the home side couldn’t find a way to break them down.

The fact that Duisburg keeper Tom Starke was untested in the first period was a sign of the balance of play in the first 45 minutes.

Cottbus came out in the second half in exactly the right frame of mind attacking Duisburg from the very start. First of all da Silva had a chance from close range following a pass from Sörensen. Then seven minutes in and Stanislav Angelov roamed down the right and played a great ball across the face of the goal, only to find no forwards on hand to convert.

Duisburg were finding it difficult to get into the game as the home side kept pressing them back. It seemed only a matter of time before the pressure paid off. On 67 minutes the fully deserved equaliser arrived.

Dimitar Rangelov fired in a shot which Duisburg keeper Tom Starke was only able to parry out. The incoming Timo Rost was on hand to slot home to make it 1-1.

However, just as the Cottbus pressure continued to mount and they pressed for their first win of the season, the away side hit them with a second free kick. Bosnian international Ivica Grlic fired a direct free kick over the wall, past Piplica and into the left hand corner to give to visitors a surprise 74th minute lead.

As the game entered the final period, Cottbus seemed to have had the stuffing knocked out of them. One final chance fell to da Silva at the far post following a Rivic free kick, but the Brazilian defender was unable to direct his header on target.

Despite a spirited second half showing, Cottbus remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a single win to their name. New coach Bojan Prasnikar has a real task on his hands and will left scratching his head as to how his team finished pointless tonight.
