"I missed the first two days of last weekend's rookie minicamp because of a short vacation, but I wanted to get a glimpse at Dez Bryant for myself in Sunday's final workout at Cowboys Stadium.

It took him one play in one-on-one drills to show he can be special. He put a double move on Marquis Floyd and caught a deep ball from Matt Nichols. What struck me was how easy Bryant made it looked. He never broke stride. He didn't grunt and groan as he got into his move. He just stuck his foot in the ground and went.

It was pretty impressive, even to an untrained eye.

After practice, Wade Phillips was asked about Bryant's weekend and the Cowboys coach heaped praise on the rookie wide out.

"Dez Bryant is an absolute talent," Phillips said. "You don't see that many come in and look that good that early. In 33 years, there's not very many that I can say look that talented at their position for a three-day period."

Ray Sherman spoke glowingly about Bryant, comparing him athletically to some of the best receivers he's coached, like Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, Randy Moss and John Taylor. And that came only an hour or so after the Cowboys selected Bryant.

Should we tap the brakes some here on this Bryant-is-the-second-coming talk?

This isn't to dismiss Bryant's talents. They appear to be enormous. But this was a rookie minicamp, and he was going against some guys that won't sniff a regular-season game, catching passes from quarterbacks that probably won't sniff a preseason game.

I believe the Cowboys did the right thing in trading up to get Bryant. He was their top target. He can do things many wide outs can't. He could transform the return game in 2010.

While much of the focus from the first day of the camp was about his lack of conditioning, I liked the fact that he continued to make plays even after dry heaving. Give Bryant three weeks with strength and conditioning coach Joe Juraszek, and he will be fine. The playmaking ability is a God-given thing. And he wasn't the only rookie to be out of shape, but he's the first-rounder so he gets the bulk of the attention.

Everything Bryant did on the field and how he dealt with the off-field questions was a positive last weekend. "
