"Faced with a glut at inside linebacker after the addition of second-round draft pick Sean Lee, the Dallas Cowboys are trying to trade Bobby Carpenter to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for offensive tackle Alex Barron.

The Cowboys' Web site reported Thursday that the deal could be finalized by Monday.

For the trade to happen, Barron must first sign his tender offer of $2.62 million. Selected 19th overall by the Rams in 2005, the Florida State product has started 74 of 76 games.

Carpenter has been a disappointment since the Cowboys selected him 18th overall in 2006. The former Ohio State standout has notched only three starts and has made few impact plays.

Handed the sub-package linebacker job last season after Kevin Burnett signed with the San Diego Chargers in free agency, Carpenter earned praise for his work against tight ends. But the Cowboys shopped him around during the draft, which included the selection of Lee, a Penn State standout expected to eventually replace aging veteran Keith Brooking.

Dallas nabbed Lee one year after it grabbed Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams in the third round. Williams is one of the Cowboys' fastest defenders, but he has struggled to master the playbook after serving mainly as a pass rusher in college."
