"Shane Doan, playing for the first time since a shoulder injury knocked him out the playoffs last season, scored the game-winning goal and had an assist Thursday night - but he wasn't bashful about critiquing his play.

"I felt good, got a couple hits, nothing too big, but kind of stumbled and bumbled around out there for the most part," he said. "Wasn't as smooth as I'd like to be, but it's good to have that first one under the belt."

Doan's power-play goal with 1:06 left in overtime lifted the Coyotes to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at Jobing.com Arena.

Kyle Wellwood, battling to grab a roster spot, knocked in the tying goal on a power play with 1:43 remaining in the third period.

The Coyotes fell behind 1-0 only 12 second into the second period on an unassisted goal by Alexei Ponikarovsky.

"I thought we had some good energy to start," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Second period, we came out and gave up that early goal, I think our players thought it was going to be icing, and it didn't turn out to be icing.

"I thought we lost too many one-on-one battles in the second period, and we let them dictate a little bit of the play, but I really liked the way we played in the third, we generated a lot of scoring chances."

The Coyotes, who were two of six on the power play, never played shorthanded. Their only penalty was a fighting major by Nolan Yonkman, who mixed it up with the Kings' Kevin Westgarth.

"I really liked the discipline factor of our team, no penalties against is a big plus for us at this time of the year," Tippett said. "But there's some things we need to work on, that's for sure.""
