QUOTE

A man with a rifle in a bag was apprehended on the campus of St. John's University in Queens at around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police are still searching for a second suspect.

According to a message published on the school's website, public safety officers quickly disarmed the suspect and turned him over to NYPD. No shots were fired and no injuries have been reported.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the university released a statement saying that the NYPD still had a heavy presence on the campus and that they were conducting an extensive search of all buildings.

The university alerted students by posting a public service advisory on their website. Officials also sent out campus-wide text messages to students' cell phones – an emergency response system they added earlier this month in response to the April shootings at Virginia Tech.

Officials instructed all students, faculty, and staff to stay inside their buildings until further notice.

All classes at the school were cancelled for the remainder of the evening.
http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?s...1&aid=74000
Supposedly, they are two more guys running around with guns on campus, so everyone is staying inside. It's crazy, I was about to go to class and just as I was about to leave the door, my roomate got a call from his brother telling him to stay inside.

If anyone is wondering, I'm okay -- just a little shook considering what's been going on with these college shootings: Virginia Tech, Delaware.

School shootings are becoming a common thing. You never know when a certain idiot decides he should shoot up a school full of students, just because he wasn't given hugs as a child. It's starting to get real scary.

    Glad that you're ok.

Thanks, guys. They just found another guy with a 50 cal. and now they are looking for some other people.

I also hear there could be hostages. That's just hearsay though. I really don't know what's going on, except we're not allowed to go out and I'm pretty hungry.

Thats crazy man. I am glad you are safe.

A lot of universities are now using text messaging to alert students of situations like this. I know A&M just implemented one.

This is happening because Unis don't have real security. Anyone can go on campus, freedom to do anything the want. Yes they student will not give up that kind of freedom but it comes at a cost.

    Glad you're ok MrJ.

Everything is cool now. Classes resumed the following morning and I had a 7:30AM class which I was thinking about not going to since I couldn't really study after what happened.

It really makes me wonder though. They said the guy was "mentally unstable" and if that's true, who knows what he could have done. The fact of the matter is he had a rifle which was loaded. And the "thorough search of all buildings and facilities" isn't exactly accurate since the dorms weren't checked at all. They said the cameras were checked, but someone can still hide a weapon - obviously he managed to get through campus with a huge one - in their bags and such. I also heard from numerous sources ranging from professors to students that he had two other people with him with smaller guns. I guess they managed to leave.

The thing that really gets me is the fact that before my roommate stopped me, I was going to attend a class in the building he was found in. You have to wonder what a "mentally unstable" man with a loaded rifle can do. I think all St. John's students and faculty alike are very fortunate because this could have easily been a very ugly situation.

    ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING TODAY!

QUOTE

CNN) -- A student has been taken into custody Friday after holding people hostage at gunpoint for more than an hour at a California high school, authorities said.

No one was injured at Las Plumas High School in Oroville, California, in the standoff, which began about 9 a.m. PT (noon ET) and ended just before 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET), according to the Butte County Sheriff's Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The sheriff's department said the male student fired one shot into the air, but no one was hit. The hostages were held in the band room.

A SWAT team was called in to the school. All of the school district's six schools were on lockdown during the incident, according to the district.

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/28/school.standoff/

No one was injured fortunately, but how soon before parents start taking their kids out of school and resort to home schooling. This has gotten out of control.

This really is getting ridiculous. It's sad how disturbed some kids have become.

The sad thing is, most of the time, you can't really predict it happening. There's alot of people in schools who seem mentally disturbed, but it's difficult to tell if they're a danger to themselves or to others.

Just the thought of all these shootings is making me nervous about actually going away to a school, and living at a school's dorms. I wouldn't be surprised if schools went crazy with rules and laws about what students can carry on to campus, and with checking dorm rooms and other stuff like that. I'm nervous about the schools overdoing it with their security precautions.
