Marquette men's basketball coach Tom Crean will be announced as the new coach at Indiana, according to a report from ESPN on Tuesday.

Indiana could make the official announcement as early as Wednesday, according to the report.

Crean, who compiled a 190-96 record over nine seasons with the Golden Eagles, has made eight postseason appearances, including a Final Four berth in 2003. It was the first time since 1977 that Marquette had reached the national semifinals.

This past season, Crean guided Marquette to a 25-10 record, which included an overtime defeat to Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The hiring would come after a tumultuous season for the Hoosiers, who lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Arkansas this past March.

Due to allegations of NCAA violations, former Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson resigned in his second year with the Hoosiers, who were 22-4 at the time.

Sampson was cited by the NCAA for five major violations, including the non-observance of restrictions that were imposed on the Hoosiers because of his previous infractions while at Oklahoma.

Sampson also was alleged to have misled Indiana and investigators by "repeatedly" providing "false or misleading information." Major violations of NCAA rules - as opposed to "secondary" violations - can lead to such sanctions as a ban on postseason play.

Indiana was in the hunt for the Big Ten title but, under interim coach Dan Dakich, the Hoosiers went 3-4 over their final seven games, losing their final three contests.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was announced that Indiana starters Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis had been kicked off the team due to violating team rules.

With star freshman Eric Gordon expected to go to the NBA, it is possible that Crean would not have one returning starter with seniors D.J. White and Lance Stemler graduating.

    Interesting move for Crean

With all of IU's problems and the strong possibility of probation, Crean will be without pressure for a few years. Plus, it is easier to climb the Big Ten standing than it is the Big East standings.
