"Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said Friday that his focus is on keeping Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning in check, something he has tried before with varying levels of success.

Crennel, the former coordinator in New England, game-planned for Manning many times, often in the playoffs, when the Patriots faced the Colts.

"It's a tough task," Crennel said. "We hope that we can disrupt him just a little bit and know that it's hard to get him on the ground, but if we can disrupt him and screw up the timing a little, then maybe we can help ourselves."

Crennel said that one of the most difficult things about Manning is he often approaches the line of scrimmage with four or five plays in mind. He then makes a decision based on what the defense shows.

Then there is the matter of Manning's presnap ritual, when he uses hand and arm movements that might signal an audible - or might simply be an effort to fool defenders.

"He could probably be an actor if he needed to be," Crennel said, "and he is at times. That makes it difficult to try to determine what's real and what's not real."
