Cubs' Piniella named as coach for NL All-Stars
    Thursday, June 26, 2008 04:57 PM

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- National League All-Star manager Clint Hurdle of the Colorado Rockies and Major League Baseball on Thursday named Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella as one of the coaches for the 79th All-Star Game to be played at Yankee Stadium on July 15.

Piniella, 64, replaces former New York Mets manager Willie Randolph, who was fired on June 17.

A Tampa native, Piniella was an All-Star for the Kansas City Royals in 1972 and was the NL manager in 1991 as the skipper for the Cincinnati Reds. He played 11 of his 18 seasons for the New York Yankees and his Cubs currently have the best record in the majors.

Also named to the NL All-Star staff were head athletic trainer Jeff Porter of the Atlanta Braves and assistant athletic trainer Mike Kozak of the Florida Marlins.
