<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">OAKLAND -- Erick Dampier has made it official: $16.8 million will not be enough to buy his services for the next two years.
The NBA's fourth-leading rebounder last season formally notified the Golden State Warriors on Friday of his intention to void the final two years of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Warriors head of basketball operations Chris Mullin appeared ready to move forward despite the expected bad news.

"We received the paperwork on Friday indicating Erick has officially exercised the opt-out clause in his contract," Mullin said Saturday. "We intend to speak with him and his representatives when NBA rules permit us to do so, which, as an unrestricted free agent, is July 1."

Because they were his previous employer, the Warriors hold an advantage over other teams in terms of re-signing the star center.

They can offer him a seven-year deal with 12.5percent increases, while everyone else is limited to a six-year contract with 10percent annual raises.

If Mullin chooses to let Dampier sign elsewhere, the Warriors could fall up to $9 million under the projected salary cap. That, however, would also mean relinquishing their rights to Adonal Foyle and Brian Cardinal, two other free agents this summer.

Bones is one of my favorites and I would love to see him come to the warriors. The guy's got a great attitude and i think his experience will be a benefit for the younger guys on the team. Plus, he's great for the community.

Nb..Damp as a free agent is not a surprise. Let's get the best out of a possible trade. There are a lot of teams out there who want a guy like Damp.

If we got Brent Barry we'd have two slam dunk contest champs on the squad.
