Second baseman Daniel Murphy feels a "subtle tug" on his right side from an intercostal muscle in his ribs, so the second baseman is headed to New York on Tuesday to be examined by New York Mets doctors. General manager Sandy Alderson said it is possible Murphy will receive a cortisone injection during the trip to the Hospital for Special Surgery. Manager Terry Collins said Murphy is being cautious after third baseman David Wright and outfielder Scott Hairston experienced side-muscle issues last spring training in Mets camp. Hairston's injury lingered throughout spring training, but both made it back for the opening day roster in 2012.
