Am I disappointed Mueller or Savage did not get the GM gig? Hell yeah. They say this thing w/ Marino just recently fell into place. If memeory serves, The first person Wayne talked to was Dan out on the golf course shortly after the season ended. The plan was probably put into motion then. Vanilla Dave now has "motivation" to stop being so damn predictable or else he gets shown the door. After doing a fair amount of reading, It seems that his thing may work out. Dan will bring a unique perspective on the QB & WR positions as well as CB. I bet 2 of the 3 QBs on the roster won't be back next year while Brunnell & P. Rivers will take their place. Additionally, he will provide the passion & emotion that the franchise has been missing since he "retired".
I would think Marino would atleast be able to pick out WR's, imagine you come to Miami for a personal workout and ole' number 13 is zipping passes downfield to you! Im not as sure he could evaluate QB's...
I don't know...I don't trust that he'll make a good GM. I haven't seen the experience yet. Good players don't necessarily make good executives...neither do analysts.
What's more important is that Rick Spielman has say over Dave Wannstedt. According to one the Sun Sentinel, Rick was the one who got us Ricky Williams. Also, Wannstedt ignored Spielman and drafted Eddie Moore when Spielman wanted to draft Anquan Bolden. A lot of NFL scouts thought Eddie Moore would still be available AFTER THE DRAFT. I think Dan will be smart enough to give Spielman a chance to work without being incumbered by Teflon Dave's stupidity.
I'm with you, Dan should can Telflon Dave ASAP. " I would think Marino would atleast be able to pick out WR's, imagine you come to Miami for a personal workout and ole' number 13 is zipping passes downfield to you! Im not as sure he could evaluate QB's..." That is great for the team. I think that it really helps an NFL team when the executives have actual NFL player or coaching experience. They tend to run the team more like a team and less like a business. Just look at the 49ers situation with John York. The guy had zero football experience and runs the team much like Bidwell does in Arizona. I have heard nothing but criticism of the Marino hiring, comparing it to Matt Millen or something. Marino has a different job than Matt Millen, and Marino *is* the Miami Dolphins. Millen was much more of an outsider. Dan Marino is a leader both on and off the field, and I believe that in small ways, he will make Miami a better team.
The reason I think Marino may have trouble evaluating QBs is because he played the position with his cannon, finding a guy with that arm strength is unlikely so how does he find a guy that can win in a different way than he did...Ive always thought that the best coaches and execs come from below avg players that had to work extremly hard and play an intellegent style to stick with a team, they seem to know how to teach the little things that make teams successful...

I think Marino might be OK for the long haul, but he will take his lumps. Being in the studio gets you involved in the game, but it doesn't give you the GM type experience that he needs. He would be well served to go golfing with some of his peers from other teams or go visit them for a few days to pick their brains. It appears to me that Marino has always been one that could make connections with others. Long-term, this will help him in his position and make him better. I would hope that by getting the job, that he is smarter than to always try to assume that every draft pick is a future HOF player. Maybe he will just need to make a mistake or two to learn.....which may be the end of Teflon Dave

With Millen, I think they were hoping for some that 49er Magic.

Further, I think DB's make the best coaches. i.e. Jeff Fisher, Dungy, Herm Edwards, & Mora, jr (only time will tell) Look how much Marino improved in the Studio this year. He knows this season will be a learning curve. His downfall might be his looking at the big picture and not wanting to get to detail oriented. That is where Spielman will help as he seems to be more of a nuts & bolts kinda guy.
For the record, I think Jay Fiedler would make a fantastic QB coach, he knows how to play the position, hes smart(degree from ivy league Dartmouth), and he has won without much talent, exactly what I think makes a quality coach
