"In the end, the chance for Darren Sharper to earn more money with the Jaguars couldn't trump the opportunity to chase another Super Bowl ring with the New Orleans Saints.

Sharper, the free agent safety who leads all NFL players with 63 career interceptions, decided Monday to stay put in New Orleans, signing a one-year contract rather than start over with a revamped defense in Jacksonville.

The 34-year-old safety and five-time Pro Bowl selection was offered a more lucrative deal with the Jaguars, according to a team source, but it couldn't overcome the emotional ties he built in one year with the Saints and New Orleans.

"We took a shot at it. A lot of us thought it'd be a good fit for us and for him," said Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio. "We aggressively pursued the potential of bringing him here and showed him our interest. If it didn't work out, then we just wish him the best and go forward."

Sharper, who intercepted nine passes in 2009 and returned three for touchdowns, was viewed as a significant piece in the Jaguars' attempt to overhaul their defense, which finished 23rd last season in yards allowed. The team had already added seven new players on defense, including free agent defensive end Aaron Kampman, middle linebacker Kirk Morrison via a draft-day trade, and four draft picks along the defensive line."
