MRI reveals torn cartilage in Robinson's knee

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO -- David Robinson had an MRI that revealed torn knee cartilage, forcing him to miss Game 2 of the Spurs-Suns playoff series Monday night.

He is listed as day to day, but the 7-footer expects to play Friday night in Game 3 in Phoenix.

The San Antonio center tore cartilage late in regulation of Saturday's playoff opener, which the Suns won 96-95 in overtime. Robinson was hurt when he drew a charge on point guard Stephon Marbury.

"I fell back on my knee a little bit and tweaked it,'' Robinson said at Monday's shootaround. He did not practice, and had his left knee tightly wrapped.

San Antonio also will be without backup center Kevin Willis, who was suspended for one game by the league for his flagrant foul on Scott Williams.

Willis, going for a defensive rebound, leveled Williams with an elbow to the throat just before halftime. He was immediately ejected, and on Sunday NBA vice president Stu Jackson suspended him.

With Robinson and Willis on the sideline, 6-foot-7 forward Malik Rose most likely will start and play most of their minutes. Rose started most of the 18 games that Robinson missed during the regular season because of lower back and right knee injuries.

Robinson is confident his teammates will rise to the moment.

"The guys don't get their heads down and they keep playing, and that's what will happen,'' he said. </div>

Even if he does return for game three, how effective can he possibly be?

probably not too effective, but he hasn't had that effective of a year. spurs should still win though.

You seem to foget that DRob was able to help Timmy D take advantage of the relentless double teams...he had 18 points on 8/8 shooting in the first game...it's going to be a big blow I think, but nothing that he Spurs can't recover from...one thing I want to see is Frank Johnson putting in Big Jake...Malik Rose is too short, I think, to contest with either Amare's height and athleticism or Big Jake's height and strength advantage.

i agree with pchotsauce. i think the spurs play better without d-rob, too. malike rose steps it up more as a starter and he is tenacious at crashing the boards. d-rob had a nice game, but no one on the suns is intimidated by him and they go right after him. they see his health issues as a reason to attack him. without d-rob, duncan will step it up on the shotblocking end. and the spurs still have willis to bang inside. and gino gets more minutes now.

what are you babbling about? We're not talking about whether he's washed up or not. We are talking about what he brings to the team and why his loss is a big blow to the team. He gives the Spurs a huge size advantage regardless if he is soft or not. They can run the high low game with him and Duncan that they did a few times in Game 1. He just opens up a lot of things for the Spurs. His 18 points just proves that he can still contribute. The Spurs are lucky that Stephen Jackson has stepped up big because Malik Rose is doing squat right now. It's because Jackson that the Spurs are up right now at the half. Also, shapecity, if you didn't know by now, Willis was suspended for this game. I don't even know why you threw in a state about ignorant people trying to bring you down, pchotsauce, are you paranoid or somethin'?

i know willis is suspended. but if d-rob is out for more than 1 game, willis can fill the void for size. don't you think having smaller guys running up and down the court open up more opportunities for the Spurs? i just think gino, rose, and jackson are better playmakers than d-rob at this point.

Alright, I get what you're trying to say, shapecity. However, I think that if this series has to turn into a small-ball type of thing it plays into the Suns' hands. Frank Johnson loves to play small ball (which is stupid on his part, as evidenced by him playing Little Jake too much) so the Suns would know what they would have to do.

Series is tied up now. Looked like Ferry was going to have a heart-attack. I guess that's what the playoffs are about...unexpected people stepping up to help get wins. The Suns need someone like that. Did they even get over 10 bench points?

(on a sidenote, if Big Jake gets absolutely no play again if DRob is out I am going to start the fire Frank Johnson campaign.)

amare completely struggled tonight without D-Rob on the court. rose did a great job on him and forced him right into TD. also Ferry had a big game defensively and hitting a key 3pt shot, along with a bullshit foul call on Voskul. I think that 4 point play really changed the game in favor of the Spurs and they never looked back.

it's not the small ball aspect, it's the playmaking ability of the Spurs energy players. they get the loose balls and do all the intangibles that frustrate a team like phoenix. the spurs energy players are smaller, but they play big on both ends of the court.

Yep, the Spurs little guys completely outhustle the Suns players. It wasn't Malik giving Amare problems because he really didn't guard him through the game. It was TD and Ferry, with Ferry giving Amare problems moreso than TD. You can see how frustruated Amare was because of the fits Ferry was giving him. He got so frustruated that he started to force things to prove a point, but it wasn't happening. He also tried to lay it up too much...where's the ruthless, dunking, in your face Amare we saw in the regular season? Also, there was another disappointing performance in the playoffs for Marion. He's my favorite player and all, but he isn't involved at all on the offensive end in the playoffs. He just watches the ball while standing the perimeter. Is there any way someone can kidnap Little Jake so he won't be able to play game three? You see all those stupid fouls and little tantrums he displays on the court? He did all through the regular season, yet he still manages to get minutes.
