England's Brian Davis overcame a mouth abscess to sit two shots off the lead at the halfway stage of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. (Davis 9/1 to win)

The 35-year-old US-based Londoner hit the headlines back in April when he called a penalty on himself during a play-off with Jim Furyk at the Verizon Heritage, but was back among the leaders in Texas with a second-round 65 to add to his opening 64.

Davis, who is currently two shots behind leader Bryce Molder, played down the effects of his sore mouth.

"It's just one of those things, I went last night and had it taken care of," he said. "Obviously I've got a lots of swelling still so it will take a few days to go down, but I'll be fine."
