I had on the end of whatever junior league Daytona race was on while waiting for NC State/UNC to start on ESPN, and I'm pretty sure I just saw some fans seriously injured and/or killed when there was a huge wreck at the finish, and one of the cars punctured the barrier to the grandstand. I also saw a tire fly at 200 mph into the middle of the bleacher section. Wow, just insane.
https://twitter.com/brantjames Interesting updates at this Twitter feed. Crazy stuff. Not a race buff although I don't mind it, but a tire flying 100 yards at 200 mph into a crowd is going to do some major damage.
The only reason I had on ESPN was because of the college hoops game, but when I saw that wreck and the tire fly up into the stands, you knew it was trouble.
You can see the tire go into the stands.
"I just kinda happened to maybe have had the TV on accidentally but I wasn't really paying attention..." Oh just admit it. You're one of those NASCAR freaks. You were watching every minute of that race. Guns, God and Nascar!
28 fans were injured after a violent crash at Daytona International Speedway.. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/race-f...ence-nascar-nationwide-221100722--nascar.html
NASCAR keeps having these videos taken down. Not sure how long the video link will work. Video taken from the grand stands at nascar DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona, shows another fan who got hit by tire. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LXqi0AyEfOA
I don't understand how they can have it taken down.... it's fan footage.... I'm sure there's something on the back of the ticket though, right?
A NASCAR race at the Daytona International Speedway today was interrupted by a harrowing crash that sent debris flying into the stands and left some fans injured. As CNN reports, shredded debris flew into the racetrack barrier, with some reaching 20 feet up to the second level of the track's stands. At least one fan who witnessed the event caught it on camera and promptly uploaded it to YouTube — but the video was blocked by NASCAR on copyright grounds just minutes after it went live. It's not clear yet why NASCAR decided to block the fan-made video — it's not as if the fan ripped a television broadcast — but in typical fashion it's already been mirrored, re-uploaded, and shared. NASCAR, like other sporting organizations, claims all rights to film and broadcast anything that happens at its events. But taking down a video of a dangerous crash that injured spectators has sparked a backlash from observers who see it as an improper use of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which is typically used to suppress pirated content like music and movies. http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/23/4022512/nascar-copyright-takedown-daytona
NASCAR released the following statement - The fan video of the wreck on the final lap of today's NASCAR Nationwide Series race was blocked on YouTube out of respect for those injured in today's accident. Information on the status of those fans was unclear and the decision was made to err on the side of caution with this very serious incident.
Sounds like this isn't the case, thankfully. Over thirty fans were injured and two, reportedly, are in critical condition. Hopefully things work out.
