Re: D'Brickashaw Builds a Strong Case http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/411771p-348294c.html<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Jets haven't used a top-four pick on an offensive lineman since Chris Ward in 1978, but that could change Saturday. Chances are, they will have a shot at Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, a local kid with an unusual name and an uncommonly good game."He's one of those rare left tackles that come out every five or six years," an NFC offensive line coach said yesterday. "It would be a match made in heaven for the Jets."With only two experienced tackles (Adrian Jones and recently acquired journeyman Anthony Clement), the Jets' need is obvious. They're high on Ferguson, the best offensive-line prospect in the draft. He's 6-6, 307 pounds, with a 7-3 wingspan and the athleticism of a power forward. That he grew up in Freeport, L.I., 10 minutes from the Jets' facility in Hempstead, makes him a natural."Being a New Yorker, I've got friends back home who tell me, 'We want you to come to the Jets,'" Ferguson said yesterday. "It would be great if that happens."Ferguson was a four-year starter at Virginia, where he played under former Jets coach Al Groh. As freshman, he weighed only 245 pounds, drawing wisecracks from opponents. A Florida State defensive end took one look at Ferguson and quipped, "Son, you should've red-shirted."Even now, Ferguson is small by NFL standards - the average left tackle is about 320 pounds - but his lack of bulk won't hurt him, according to many talent evaluators. The game is evolving. Premier pass rushers are getting smaller, but quicker (see the Colts' Dwight Freeney), so left tackles can't be plodding behemoths.</div>Also:<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>TRADE TALK: One rumor yesterday: The Jets (No. 4) swap first-round picks with the Raiders (No. 7), who want a quarterback, and select Oregon NT Haloti NGata with the seventh pick. The Jets don't have a pure nose tackle for their new 3-4 scheme.Such a move would raise questions about the future of DT Dewayne Roberston, who may not fit in a 3-4. But trading him is unlikely, considering they paid him a $1.95 million roster bonus in March and they'd get stuck with an $8.4 million cap charge this year.</div>

None of which were higher then the 10th pick overall, and those times were in 1988 and 1989, Both over 15 years ago.In 11 years as a head coach, Bill Belicheck took an offensive Lineman twice. The highest hes taking an Offensive Lineman was 14th pick overall, and those times were in 1993 and last year in 2005, one of which was well over 10 years ago.Not a single one of those 4 offensive lineman were an Offensive Tackle also. 2 Centers and 2 Guards. It should also be noted that the only time any of them has taken an offensive lineman in the first round has been after they have been working with a new franchise for at minimum 3 years already. It should also be noted other members of the same coaching tree.....Nick Saban - 0 for 1 in Selecting Offensive Lineman in the First Round.Al Groh - 0 for 4 in Selecting Offensive Lineman in the First Round.Romeo Crennell - 0 for 1 in Selecting Offensive Lineman in the First round.I think the Belicheck/Parcells/Mangini tree doesnt put much value into selecting offensive lineman high.To the second quote mentioned:While I would like the Jets to trade down and take Ngata, because it would fill a nice big need in a true Nose Tackle, I dont know if the Jets would be willing to pass up on the Opportunity for someone like Cutler, Vernon Davis or D'Brickashaw should he fall, which is very possible. We'll see.....
