James ‘Chunky’ DeGale (25-3, 15 KOs) suffered a bitter disappointment in losing to Chris Eubank Jr. (28-2, 21 KOs) by an embarrassingly one-sided 12 round unanimous decision in a fight that leaves the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in a position where he needs to make a decision whether to retire from boxing or not. DeGale, 33, looked completely over-matched, and almost feeble inside the ring at times in losing by the scores 115-112, 114-112 and 117-109. The scores were a lot closer than the fight that took place inside the ring. DeGale fought well enough to deserve 2 or 3 rounds at best, but not the scores that we saw from two of the judges that had it 115-112 and 114-112. That was too close. The boxing fans on social media are overwhelmingly advising for DeGale to hang up his gloves and walk away, but he chose not to make the decision tonight. Perhaps DeGale sees the possibility of George Groves coming out of retirement to face him in a rematch, which would likely still attract a lot of interest from British boxing fans, and give him one last nice payday fight.
