US Open organizers had hoped to get their defending champion back for the 2010 edition, but Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro was forced to wait until this week in Bangkok.

He was unfortunate to draw into current US Open champion Rafael Nadal’s quarter of the draw. The world No. 1 has been in Thailand enjoying a beach vacation and a first round bye, while Del Potro prepares for Olivier Rochus in his first match.

Tournament organizers will surely be hoping to showcase a Del Potro-Nadal quarterfinal, but lack of match play and his untested wrist could put a halt to a rematch of last year’s US Open semifinal, in which Del Potro completely crushed Nadal.

If organizers get their wish though, Nadal will have to be considered the favorite to move into the semifinals. The Spaniard has added a new serving dimension to his game that allowed him to surge to his first-ever US Open crown a few weeks ago.
