BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Carlos Delgado drove in a team-record nine runs Friday as the New York Mets routed the New York Yankees, 15-6, in the opener of their two-stadium doubleheader. Delgado entered the game batting just .230 and has been the subject of intense criticism. But he teed off on the Yankees with a two-run single in the fifth, a mammoth grand slam in the sixth and a three-run homer in the eighth. The nine RBI broke the Mets' previous record of eight set by Dave Kingman in 1976. Mike Pelfrey (5-6) got the win, despite allowing four runs and eight hits with four walks in five innings. Dan Giese (1-3) took the loss, yielding six runs in four-plus innings. pretty impressive.
The record for a doubleheader is 13, but the Yankees sent down Ohlendorf after the game so that won't help. Brian Cashman should be fired for not having a lefty in the bullpen. Every one of those RBIs was his fault.
I was listening to the game on the radio in the 8th. It was one of those games where you could tell he was just going to have another huge hit when he got up there. It'd be pretty huge for the Mets if he could finally get it going.
I was sitting in my dining room, which is adjacent to my family room where the TV is, and all of a sudden I hear Gary Cohen screaming his head off once Delgado hit his 2nd homer. Great stuff.
