Making him the highest paid Saints player ever. http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/NO/8684749 Saints, McAllister agree on contract extension NFL.com wire reports NEW ORLEANS (July 28, 2005) -- Deuce McAllister agreed to an seven-year contract extension with the New Orleans Saints, avoiding a feared holdout for the centerpiece of the team's offense. The deal was announced a half hour before the Saints' first mandatory meeting of training camp. Saints officials did not say how much McAllister would be paid, but McAllister had said earlier that he expected it to be the second-largest contract awarded to an NFL running back, also making him the highest paid player in franchise history. San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson, who has an eight-year, $60 million contract, is the league's highest paid running back. Entering his fifth season, McAllister has run for 4,194 yards. Most of that came during the past three seasons. He had only 91 yards rushing his rookie season, when he backed up Ricky Williams. Williams was traded to Miami after that season, and McAllister has not run for fewer than 1,000 yards since. His best season was 2003, when he ran for 1,641 yards. With a revamped offensive line, New Orleans has sought to simplify its play book and rely more heavily on the run -- a plan tailored for 6-foot-1, 232-pound McAllister.
Great deal Deuce McAlister is a STUD and he will boucne back this season. He missed I think 6 games and had 1000 yards and 9 TD's.
He's definately a good RB, but thats a lot of money to spend for a guy that has had some injury problems. With RB's once you start getting injured, it just gets worse and worse. He's only 26 though, so it may not be a large concern.
He deserves money...but not that much...I don't think he is the second best running back in the NFL...if he's healthy he'll be productive though..I'd have to see how the deal is structured
This is exactly what I don't get. There is no way that this contract runs 7 years, so why do both sides negotiate it this way?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bleedblk&gld)</div><div class='quotemain'>Usually around the third or fourth year they have to re-negotiate anyway. He's signed until 2012.</div> Right. So why do the 7? I'd be interested to see the details. I'm also curious how they got to sign this long of one considering the league's new length-of-contract rules due to the upcoming CBA change.
Why not the 7. If the Saints feel he can be a solid RB until the age of 33 then all the power to them. I think he can be solid until that age.

The contract will probably be backloaded with higher salaries in the last 2-3 years (I have not seen the details). The Saints will cut him or re-negotiate with him before the 7 years are done. Most likely, he will be cut. Players will then look at that and say 'If the owners don't have to respect the contract, then the players don't have to' and then will hold out. Kind of a silly circle. I can see some fans believing this, but if the agents and players believe that this is a 7 year contact, they just lost a lot of respect from me.

Thats life. The teams front office has the power not the player. They need to deal with it and when one of your star players hold out on your favorite team then he'll turn into Mr. Bad Guy no matter what.

I'm just saying that there is rarely a contract that goes the full 7 years without a pay cut or a holdout. This one has no chance. People then complain that the contracts aren't worth anything and how can the owners do this and how can the players do that. I'm just venting a little, and this has little to do with Deuce and his situation other than the fact that this contract will get reworked or voided in 4 years at most - even if he is doing well. Granted, my point has more to do with Owens, Walker, etc.

Its my understanding that some contracts are signed for 7 years, although they are built to void after a certain number of years (Troy Williamson's contract is for 7 years, but voids after 5). My guess is that it does something with the salary cap, allowing the team to pay more money with less penalty. This is just a blind guess, though.
