"The Devils' power play had been scoreless in three preseason games entering Tuesday night's meeting with the Flyers and it appeared that drought would carry over into a fourth game.

But after going 0-for-4, the Devils finally broke through in the third period when Jason Arnott's cross-crease pass was tapped in by Travis Zajac.

The power play was due to come alive.

"It has to," Ilya Kovalchuk said. "A guy like (assistant coach Adam Oates) knows what he's doing. Finally on the rush it went in. Hopefully it's the first of many."

The Devils' 3-2 win was their first in the preseason after two overtime losses to the Rangers and a shootout defeat to the Flyers.

Perhaps more than the victory, coach John MacLean was happy to see the power play convert.

"We got one there," he said. "We've been working on it.""
