The Devils can’t seem to hold on to a head coach.

Jacques Lemaire’s announcement Monday that he was retiring from coaching has left general manager Lou Lamoriello to conduct another coaching search.

Since Lemaire stepped down following the 1997-98 season to end his first stint in New Jersey, the Devils haven’t had a head coach that lasted more than two full seasons. Lamoriello has either fired the coach – Robbie Ftorek, Larry Robinson (Robinson later said he asked to be replaced), Kevin Constantine and Claude Julien – or he stepped down for non-hockey reasons – Pat Burns (health), Robinson again (stress-related health), Brent Sutter (to be closer to his family) and Lemaire (retirement).

As goaltender Martin Brodeur said, “For a team that keeps its players for a long time, we’re not keeping coaches for too long.”

    The question is, why?
