I'm sure that might help sales a bit. He probably wouldn't have signed with anyone other than the Sox and Yankees anyways.
8-0 is misleading since hes playing on the friggen Bo Sox. Zito would have two, maybe even three wins playing for them! Lincecum would still be our ace too
He would have 4 wins this season, on the Giants. He's been pretty bad some outings, but he gets incredible run support.
Zito would probably be about a .500 pitcher on the Red Sox. He has pitched pretty well in all his starts since returning from the bullpen, but Friday night was the first time he got any run support.
Dusty Baker set the Giants back with his inability to recognize talent and develop it to keep the team competitive after the World Series debacle against the Angels.

When management consistently brings in guys over 30 to plug in every hole they have, and they pay Bonds as much as they did for so many years, there's not a lot Dusty or Felipe Alou could do. They weren't going to go into a complete rebuilding mode because that might have hurt Barry's feelings. But they should have given younger players like Frandsen and Ortmeier more time and stopped placating veterans like Aurilia and Durham so much. The biggest problem in all of this was Sabean. If he wanted to go for it all and not rebuild, he needed to sign more than one star. He didn't do that until last year with Zito, and by then it was too late. And that one failed miserably.

I think the MLB season is long enough for teams to try out their prospects for a few games to get an indication and get them some experience. The Giants have always been able to find talent, but we seem to give up on it too, early. I fully expected a complete overhaul once Bonds left, but look at the players the Giants are using when they have no chance to make the playoffs this year. Aurilia, Vizquel, Durham? Anyone born in the 60's or early 70's shouldn't be an everyday player for the Giants.

Considering what those players turned out to be, they should have gotten one of the top ten pitchers in baseball. They probably gave up more in that trade than the Mets did in their trade to get Johan. Can't blame that on the manager. The Accardo trade was made when Felipe Alou was the manager.

Anyways why didn't the Giants re sign Jason Schimdt?
They didn't want to give Schmidt big money. Before he got to the Giants, he was a sub .500 pitcher. They weren't really sure he was a true ace. And I assume by the time Schmidt was ready to sign with the Dodgers, the Giants had decided they were going to get Zito (who signed with the Giants just after that). They are still paying for the stadium they built, so once they signed Zito, any other big signings were completely out of the question.
To add to Charles post, they also knew they weren't going to win anything so why spend to keep an old, Schmitty around? Plus they knew he was damaged goods.
