One thing winning and reaching a Super Bowl does – it raises the level of the organization when it comes to offseason speculation. And now that the early flurry of free agency is over, the Cards are in the middle of plenty of it.

-- The Anquan Boldin trade talk isn’t ever going to disappear until Boldin gets a new contract or is actually traded. And the talk will be intensified until the draft, since that is the most logical time for Boldin to be peddled. So John Clayton of ESPN did so, bringing up the Giants as a possibility in exchange for one of the many defensive linemen New York is collecting. Here are my two cents on the subject, as of now: For starters, and most importantly, I think Q stays. If Kurt Warner had retired or left, I could see the Cards moving to Matt Leinart and overhauling the offense more in the mold of Pittsburgh with one high-profile receiver (which would be Larry Fitzgerald) and heavier on the run game, which would make it easier to trade Boldin.

But Warner did stay, so I think it makes more sense to keep Q and make sure the Cards can continue to light up the scoreboard. Even if the Cards did trade Q, I don’t see it to a team they could face in the playoffs, like the Giants (or the Eagles, for that matter). Not if they can help it. Finally, if the Cards want to lean more toward the 3-4 principles in their hybrid defense, that isn’t necessarily a good fit for Clayton’s suggestion of Osi Umenyiora, as great as Umenyiora has been.

-- The other popular topic is the possibility of LaDainian Tomlinson becoming a free agent by the end of the month because of contract issues in San Diego. The Cards are looking for a back, Tomlinson has won and, in theory, LT sounds great in an offense with Warner, Q and Fitz. But … (and there is always a but).

There are a lot of miles on LT and he’s been banged up an awful lot – a lot more than the guy who likely won’t be here going forward, Mr. Edgerrin James. In eight seasons, Tomlinson has 3,167 regular-season touches (rushing attempts and catches), with Edge at 3,412. He’ll be 30 in 2009. And most importantly, he’s going to want a boatload of money – that’s why he and the Chargers are at odds now. Getting a younger, cheaper running back in the draft makes more sense to me, especially if Boldin sticks around. First, though, Tomlinson would have to be cut, which I still don't think will happen. Then, I’d say probably-not-but-never-say-never. I was once certain the Cards never were going to chase Edge either. Then look what happened.
