DJ & Josh Powell Impressive in Summer League <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The 2005 Reebok Vegas Summer League got underway Wednesday afternoon as the Dallas Mavericks took on the New Jersey Nets. The Mavericks got off to a hot start and never looked back, cruising to a 89-66 win in the opener. Josh Powell and Marquis Daniels led the way for the Mavs in the first half as they built a 50-42 halftime lead. Powell chipped in 16 of his game-high 19 points and Daniels had 13 of his 16 points at the break. The Mavs shot a blazing 60 percent in the first half on 15-25 shooting. Dallas finished the game shooting 46.6 percent (27-58 FG).</div> Recap | Boxscore
Don't forget the Josh Powell also grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with his 19 points. He had a nice game and we will see if he can keep it up.
We had MBenga back in Belgium some weeks ago for some exhibition game. Although he did not play much for the Mavs last year, his progress was amazing. He had around 15 points and around 15 rebounds in the game. Much better thanb his stats in Belgium a year before. MBenga keeps improving from a zero 4 years ago (who couldnt even contribute in Belgian minor leagues) to what he is now. If he can keep this up, he might become a decent NBA center.
Thanks for the insight chuck.be It looks like DJ can give the Mavs the shotblocker they are lacking and a solid backup to Dampier.
Powell was known for his outside shooting and ball-handling in college, a big guy who you had to guard. He should have stayed all four years at State, but I'm sure he had his reasons for leaving. He's improved as a rebounder and if he can stop other team's power forwards and play a harrassing full court defense he should catch on this year. I have not seen him play in 3 years, but he should be at his physical prime now. If there's a significant trade and Van Horn and Finley go, Powell may slip in.
