Doc Rivers talk is funny stuff

Doc Rivers has kept his sense of humor intact as the regular season has taken a hard turn into the playoffs.

And he’s been more than a little amused by rumors that have been flying since it was reported here that his future with the Celtics [team stats] is uncertain.

It was said that Rivers would be mentioned for every coaching job were he to leave the C’s and take a break from the bench. That’s apparently started a little early.

“You should hear some of the stuff,” Rivers said with a laugh as he shook his head. “It’s really pretty funny.”

Tops on the laugh list is the tale that he would take the coaching job at the University of Oregon and bring his son, Austin, a senior-to-be and top high school prospect, with him.

“The Oregon thing just came out of the blue,” Rivers said. “I mean, that was amazing.

“I just heard about it. I think Danny (Ainge) told me. Pags (co-owner Steve Pagliuca) called me and said, ‘Oregon?’

“Pags called me because he was more concerned about Austin not going to Duke, not me going to Oregon.”

Rivers paused for comedic effect.

“It was just funny,” he said. “My kids wouldn’t follow me like that.

“But there have been a lot of little things like that.”

Asked if he’d heard any other hot rumors about himself, Rivers didn’t want to fan any more flames.

“I have,” he said, “but I’m not getting into any of them.

“No. I’m staying away from all that stuff.”

For the record, if Rivers does leave the Celtics this summer with one year left on his contract, he will not do so to jump to another job. He has acknowledged that having two children as seniors in college - Jeremiah playing basketball at Indiana and Callie playing volleyball at Florida - and Austin playing his final year at Winter Park High near Orlando makes him want to be there to watch them even more than he has.

And Rivers has added that, despite the fact some say he’s leaning toward leaving, he won’t make a final decision until he gets some distance from this season.
