Boston's Doc Rivers will be the coach for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star Game to be played February 17 in New Orleans.

Rivers clinched the coaching berth after the Celtics defeated the New York Knicks, 109-93, on Monday to improve the league's best record to 33-6.

The coaching assignments are given to the mentors whose teams have the best winning percentage through games played on February 3.

With a five-game lead over Detroit (29-12), the Celtics are assured of reaching that date with fewer losses than the Pistons. Each team has five games before February 3.

Rivers is in his third season as Celtics coach, guiding the team to an Atlantic Division title in his first year at the helm.

The All-Star starters for the Eastern and Western Conference teams will be announced Thursday.
